Tai Chi Poetry in Motion: Balancing the Yin & Yang Flow
Join a certified Tai Chi instructor at the Hearst Center’s introductory course in this creative, ancient martial art from China. This class provides a solid foundation in Tai Chi involving a series of stretches and movements that flow together like “poetry in motion.”
Dates & Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Printmaking: Reduction Method – Four-Day Session
Learn a three-color process using linoleum printing blocks and a reduction method. Students print, learn the transfer method, and how to carve a design. Materials are provided in this four-session workshop.

Sculpture in Clay – Two-day Session
This is a two-day workshop designed for three-dimensional thinkers. Learn about sculpture and the process of building a piece of up to fourteen inches in height. Sculptures are built and colored slips applied for a finishing touch. Clear glazes are applied after the bisque firing. Pieces can be picked up at the Hearst Center after the final firing.

Mosaic Workshop – Two-day Session
Join Janna Bowman to repurpose glass, ceramic tiles, and bits of stained glass. Mosaics have been used as decorative art since the second half of the Third Century, BCE. In this workshop, learn new and innovative ways to apply your mosaic-making skills.

Raku Workshop – Two-day Session
Raku ware is a traditional form of Japanese pottery. This low-temperature process is most often used to create vessels used in tea ceremonies and decorative works. Join Doug Reynolds and Orville Jones on August 24 & 25 for a Raku pottery workshop. Call the Hearst Center at (319) 273-8641 for details. Participants must have previous experience working with clay. Please register early to prepare for this exciting event. Use of Open Studio time throughout July provides participants the studio time necessary to prepare for this workshop and is included in tuition. Participants fire their pieces during sessions in August.

Bring a dish to share for a potluck on Sunday afternoon as pieces are fired in the low-fire kiln. Additional Raku clay can be purchased for $25 for 25 lbs. at the front desk at the Hearst.
Family Workshops
Toad Houses Of Clay For The Garden - One-Day Session
This is a great season to create a unique house for this four legged garden visitor. Toads are great for the garden and love a place to live there. Family members create a toad house of clay. Design and color are discussed in this workshop. This workshop is designed for families with children 5 years and older.
Date: Sunday June 9
Time: 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Tuition: $19 ($17.10) for one adult and child, $8 ($7.20) for each additional participant

Time To Tie-Dye Tee-Shirts - One Day Session
Bring the kids, ages 5 years and older, and have fun at the Hearst Center. Tie-dye tee-shirt with dyes and fabric pens. This is your chance to make a fmaily tie-dyed shirt unique to your family. Dress for the mess, please!

Let's Batik! - Two Day Session
Christine Fenech leads tis workshop using colorful dyes and wax resist to create beautiful works of art you can wear or frame. Instruction designed for family members, ages 13 years and older.
