1. When is large item collection available?

Large items are picked up each week day under the following conditions:

1. Appointments must be made for this service by calling the Public Works Department, (319) 273-8629, between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm (Monday through Friday).A listing of the items you wish to have picked up MUST be given to the office and placed on your curb no later than 7:00 am on your appointed day for pick up. Appointments are limited to ten (10) stops per day.

2. Couches, chairs, recliners, carpet, carpet padding, sinks, toilets, television sets, mattresses, box springs, doors, windows, disassembled swing sets, outdoor grills, gutters, downspouts (cut into lengths no longer than eight (8) feet) and bicycles may be placed at the curb for pick up at no charge to those residents of Cedar Falls paying for the monthly refuse pick-up.

3. There is a $7.50 pick up fee for such items as washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, water heaters, dishwashers, de-humidifiers, air conditioners, computers and microwaves. This charge will be added to your monthly utility bill. Fees for an automobile tire off the rim is $2.50; auto tires on a rim are $5; truck tires are $6.50 and a truck tire on the rim will be billed at $9.

4. All items to be picked up must be listed with the Public Works Department. If not listed, items will not be picked up. The Public Works Department office is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. You may reach the Public Works Office at (319) 273-8629 during office hours.

2. If my refuse pickup day falls on a City observed holiday, when will my refuse be picked up? If my yard waste day falls on a holiday, when will my yard waste be picked up?

Normally, your refuse will be picked up the day preceeding your normal pick up day. If the preceeding day is a Monday, your refuse will be picked up the day after your normal pick up day. Mondays are set aside for yard waste only. Yard waste days are not made up. Yard waste pick up and the operation of the transfer station for yard waste only will be deferred until the next Monday. Please call the Public Works Department at 319-273-8629 with any questions regarding your pick up day.

3. How much does a yard waste container cost?

There is no cost to obtain a yard waste cart. The only time there is a charge is when the cart is emptied.

The rate is $7.00 per dump. This fee is added to your CFU bill.

4. What are the automated cart sizes and the monthly rates associated with each size?

The 32 gallon cart rate is $9.00 per month; the 68 gallon cart rate is $17.00 per month and the 95 gallon cart rate is $26.50 per month.

5. What are the hours that the automated carts may be placed out for pickup?

The carts, by ordinance, may be placed for pickup no earlier than 6:00 pm on the day prior to your refuse pickup day. The cart must be removed by 8:00 pm on your scheduled pickup day.

6. Is there a penalty for having my cart out too early or leaving it out later than 8:00 pm?

The time limits, for leaving the carts out, are established by City Code. Letters are sent out to those citizens who do not comply with the code. Non-compliance with this code is a municipal infraction and a fine may be assessed. The letters from the Director of Public Works are used for the purpose of informing citizens of their non-compliance. Continued disregard of the code will incure a fine.

7. How may a Christmas tree be disposed of by a citizen?

If the tree is free of flocking, tinsel, stands, ornaments and metal, it is considered to be a "clean" tree and may be considered to be yard waste. It can then be picked up on Mondays (yard waste day). An approved Cedar Falls christmas tree tag must be attached to a part of the tree and the tree must be cut into lengths, no more than four (4) feet. It can also be brought to the transfer station during normal hours for disposal. If the tree is not a "clean" tree, it would be considered as garbage and the refuse rules would apply; the tree would still have to be cut into lengths of four (4) feet and have a Cedar Falls christmas tree tag attached to it. 8. What should I do with my automated garbage can on days that it has snowed and plows may be coming by?

The automated cans should be placed at the usual collection location. But, be sure the can is not set out into the street.
