1. Who should I call if my sanitary sewer backs up after normal working hours?

If water is backing up in your basement and you're not using any water, there is a possibility that the problem is in the city's sewer main. Call the Sewer Division immediately at 273-8668. This number is answered 24 hours a day. After hours you will get a short recorded menu. Stay on the line and you will be connected directly to the city's on-call emergency sewer crew. There is no charge for this service. If the city's sewer main is functioning properly, the problem is within the property owner's service and you'll be advised to contact a private sewer cleaning company.

On the other hand, if the backup occurs only when you are using your facilities, the problem is more than likely within your private service line and you should call a drain cleaning company. Look for them in the Yellow Pages under "Plumbing Drains & Sewer Cleaning".
